Round 2 of the new season saw Littlemore travel to Aylesbury for their next fixture.
With a few familiar faces missing this week, the squad travelled fairly light on numbers due to some last-minute unavailability. Early line-up changes saw front-rower Dom Palmer finally get his much-awaited run-out in club colours.
Before kick-off, both teams respectfully observed a minute’s silence in memory of former Oxfordshire RFU President, Jenny Bosley — a poignant moment for those who knew her.
As the game got underway, Littlemore were quickly brought back down to earth following last week’s outing. Aylesbury were out of the blocks early, crossing the line and getting on the scoreboard within just a few minutes. Unfortunately, it was one-way traffic for much of the first half, with Aylesbury racking up nearly half a century of points in the opening 40 minutes.
For Littlemore, all was not lost. Two tries towards the end of the first half lifted spirits. Fly-half stand-in — and Littlemore’s man of the match — Jack Massey chipped over the defence, collected a pass from scrum-half Vinnie M, and touched down directly beneath the posts. Shaun Eadle slotted the conversion. Shortly after, Littlemore silenced the crowd again as they found themselves deep in Aylesbury’s 22, battling hard to break the defence before hooker Grant Thomas powered over the try line. With two tries and two conversions before half-time, something looked salvageable.
Much of the second half played out similarly to the first. Aylesbury’s pace and skill allowed them to extend their lead, but two late tries in the final 10 minutes — Grant Thomas grabbing his second and scrum-half Vinny adding another (both unconverted) — secured Littlemore a well-deserved losing bonus point. A point that could prove vital as the rest of the season unfolds.
